Happy Fourth of July! Here is one of favorites, a dark comedy that celebrates the possibility of the American dream. Enjoy!

When Aaron Beckum made his little tragicomic Cold War piece, he couldn’t have known the amount of controversy it would touch off. But everybody who saw it had something to say, and what began as a quiet meeting of absurdity and Communist Bloc starkness developed instant notoriety. It’s also that contrast that makes innocent Nikolai’s appearance on an unnerving game show a truly poignant journey.

Beckum, a VFS grad, has won local awards for “Amerikan”. He’s also a musician, and penned and performed the melancholy song over its end credits, and somehow found time to make another popular and sharp-witted short, “Pants of Exceeding Consequence”.
